Wave explores the psychological and physiological notion of a “time-based constant,” a theory stating that there are specific thresholds at which individual events can no longer be perceived because of durational minuteness; or rather, an event can only be perceived as part of an undifferentiated continuum of similarly minute events.

The human time-constant is around 1/20th of a second, meaning that a person is capable of perceiving fewer than 20 discrete events per second. This is why a film is projected at 24 frames-per-second: because this represents a rate faster than the human time-constant. Below this threshold, a film might be seen as a series of individual stills being projected one after the other, rather than giving the appearance of continuous motion. Similarly, when we hear a musical tone, say, the lowest note on a piano, even though we may know that what we are hearing is actually a mechanical vibration at a rate of 27.5 cycles-per-second, we hear instead a continuous tone.

Wave has crudely approximated this phenomenon, illustrating several gradual shifts from one perceptual state to another. Finger tapping has intimate control over rate, and the sonic duration of any one tap is inherently minute (assuming a sufficiently rigid surface). In addition, the fingers are numbered so as to allow better sound/image correlation of patterns at high speed. If the action were notated as a score, it would look much like the common visual representation of a sine wave.
